Chief of Defence Force designate Air Vice-Marshal Tony Davies has selected Warrant Officer Class 1 Wiremu Moffitt DSD as Warrant Officer of the Defence Force.


Warrant Officer Class 1 (WO1) Moffitt (Ngā Rauru, Ngati Ruanui) has a distinguished career spanning more than three decades in a variety of roles, both at the operational and strategic leadership level.

He currently serves as the 16th Sergeant Major of the New Zealand Army, and has held previous appointments of Warrant Officer Joint Forces New Zealand and Command Sergeant Major-Special Operations Component Command.

“WO1 Moffitt will be a trusted advisor as part of my leadership team. His perspective will offer a great balance and I’m sure he will add a lot of value, not only to the headquarters, but widely across the Defence Force.”

AVM Davies said he was looking forward to working alongside WO1 Moffitt, who he believes will have huge impact.

WO1 Moffitt will take over on 6 June 2024 from WO1 Mark ‘Titch’ Mortiboy, who has served in the role since 2018. WO1 Mortiboy will continue to serve in the NZDF.

WO1 Moffitt joined New Zealand Army in 1990 as a Regular Force Cadet. After he graduated, he worked as an instructor at the Waiouru Training Depot. He then became a rifleman with 1st Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment.

His Troop, Squadron, and Regimental level appointments have included a wide range of operator roles in the counter-terrorism and special reconnaissance fields, Regimental Sergeant Major, 1 NZSAS Regiment, Command Sergeant Major – Special Operations Command, and Warrant Officer – Joint Forces at HQ Joint Forces New Zealand at Trentham, Wellington.

He has served in Bougainville, Solomon Islands, Timor Leste (East Timor), and Afghanistan.

WO1 Moffitt graduated from the New Zealand Warrant Officer Promotion Course in 2007. He is also a graduate of the Joint Special Operations Forces Senior Enlisted Advisor program in Tampa, Florida, the NZ Joint Warrant Officer Advanced Course (JWOAC), and the National Defense University – Joint Forces Keystone program.
