Hon Mark Mitchell is a New Zealand Member of Parliament. New Zealand’s Minister for Police, Minister for Corrections, and Minister for Emergency Management, he was the country’s 39th Minister of Defence (2017), National Party Spokesperson for Defence (2017-2020), a member of the New Zealand Parliament Justice Select Committee, and chairperson of the Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Select Committee. Having been elected to Parliament in 2011, he has also held the ministerial portfolios of Minister for Land Information and Minister of Statistics. He served in the New Zealand Police from 1989 to 2002, including time as a dog handler. Prior to this, he worked eight years as a private security contractor during which he spent time in Iraq, including the siege of the Italian-run An Nasiriyah compound in Southern Iraq by the Mahdi militia in 2004.
