Modular Cube system is the subject of a new memorandum of understanding (MoU) inked recently between SH Defence and Navantia.

Danish equipment provider SH Defence and Spain’s Navantia have signed an MoU to explore the development of the SH Defence “The Cube” system in future designs, such as new SMART Ships line, and in retrofit options for existing ships.

The signing took place at Navantia Headquarters in Madrid, with Donato Martínez, CTO of Navantia, and Rene Bertelsen, CEO of SH Defence, in attendance.

“The Cube”, with a wide catalogue of up to 350 different modules, aligns with Navantia’s own research on ship modularity. These innovative developments will allow Navantia’s ships to be reconfigured depending on the mission and adapted to the potential future needs without the necessity of complex modifications to the platforms.

The Cube System is a plug-and-play modular system for air, surface and subsea domains run from a Cube Ready platform (vessel). It provides infrastructure to handle and move mission modules on deck, inside the hangar, or to replace existing modules in the mission bay. All modules use the footprint of shipping containers and are loaded into the side of platforms with mission bays.

Its mine laying module, for example, with one or more storage modules connected, is capable of handling all known brands of sea mines. A minehunting module comprises a C2 container with a launch and recovery system, an AUV with a multi-sensor platform and a mine disposal system.

SH Defence, founded in 1974, designs and produces custom-made machines and systems that handle equipment deep below and above the waterline in the harshest environments on the planet.
