Security deemed essential

Private security services - an essential service.

In accordance with decisions made by the New Zealand Cabinet today,  a 1pm update to the government’s www.covid19.govt.nz website now lists all private security services as essential.

According to the update, “security is considered an essential service, even if security services are being provided in relation to a premise for a non-essential service.”

This resolves earlier ambiguity in relation to what privately provided security services – if any – were deemed ‘essential services’ in the context of the New Zealand government measures to curb COVID-19.

The New Zealand Security Association has communicated this change to its members in an update earlier this afternoon.
